Disability Inclusion Statement

 Disability Pride and Activism

BNNH recognises that being disabled is a source of pride for many in our community. We celebrate the contributions of disabled advocates and activists who push for better practices and to eliminate barriers. This includes those who educate others through a variety of mediums, including the creative arts, those who shout and protest and those who quietly challenge others to do better in the everyday. Our organisation honours and respects this culture of activism in our community.

Our Commitment

As a new organisation, BNNH is committed to ensuring people with disabilities can actively take part in our community. We strive to reduce barriers, improve accessibility, and create a welcoming environment where everyone feels a sense of belonging. We believe that all participants, including those with disabilities, enrich our community.

BNNH understands that people with disabilities may face multiple, overlapping forms of discrimination, including those based on gender, sexuality, race, religion, class, and citizenship status. Our approach is intersectional, recognising and addressing these complexities to ensure an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone.

Current Actions

  • Disability Action Plan: In our first year, we're developing a Disability Action Plan in consultation with the disability community.

  • Community Engagement: We're building trusted relationships with disabled community members through a variety of events and activities.

  • Inclusive Design: People with disabilities are actively involved in designing our organisation, activities, and events. We offer volunteer and student placements and encourage participation in our workforce.

  • Accessible Activities: We ensure our activities and events are held in accessible venues, considering various accessibility needs. Future permanent venues will meet accessibility standards.

  • AUSLAN Classes: Free AUSLAN classes and Deaf culture awareness training is available to staff and volunteers to increase accessibility and understanding.

  • Training: All staff must have completed or undergo disability/accessibility training. This training will resist the medical model of individual impairment and focus on the Social Model of Disability, understanding that disabilities are created by the societal barriers that we have a responsibility to address.
